Frequently Asked Question
In which countries is Sensemedic available?
Sensemedic is available within all European countries and in certain selected other countries. Sensemedic is not available in the USA. If you are outside of Europe and consider using Sensemedic for your project, please contact us so we can review if we can provide the service to you.
Can the Sensemedic dispenser be used by multiple patients sequentially?
Yes, this is possible. The dispensers are delivered to the healthcare team in ready-for-use condition – no technical steps are required to start using the dispensers. Through the Web Portal each dispenser can be assigned to a patient, using the patient’s code number only, and can then be handed to this patient for immediate use. Upon completion the dispenser can be decoupled from the patient’s account and assigned to a new patient such the data that is collected and stored from that point onwards is assigned to the next patient.
How is privacy of data ensured?
Data is stored anonymously, using code numbers, in such a way that records cannot be traced back to individuals. Only persons that know the link between the code number and the patient can positively identify a patient’s record. For typically research projects this link is uniquely known to the health care professional or researcher conducting the study.
How long does the battery last?
Each dispenser contains a rechargeable battery. This battery usually lasts about 4 to 6 months. If the typical use period of patients exceeds 3 months, Sensemedic delivers a charger with each medication dispenser. The dispenser can be charged by the patient, in a way that is similar as charging a mobile phone. Charging takes 4 to 6 hours. The patient can be reminded by text message if it the battery charge falls under a pre-determined limit.
If I do not want to use the Web Portal, can I still adjust the medication times of the dispenser?
Yes, that is possible. Sensemedic can provide prepared fax forms with each dispenser, that allows the researcher or health care professional to fill in the necessary information for the participant using the dispenser (typically the start date and the agreed intake periods). This from can be faxed to Sensemedic, and will processed within 24 hours.
Is it possible to set text reminder messages at a different time during weekends?
Yes, that is possible. In fact it is possible to set the time different for each day of the week, or skip days if required.
Is there a limit to the number of intake periods set during the day?
Within practical limits, as many intake periods can be set as required for the study.
Can the medication data be exported in such a way that I can put it in my data analysis program directly?
Usually it is possible to tailor the format of the data that is contained in the downloaded file such that it optimally matches the data protocols of external programs. In research projects, the measurement data is typically processed in programs developed by the research team, to ensure that the analysis occurs according to the study protocol. Sensemedic often creates custom download functions for research projects.
Is Sensemedic suitable for all types of medication?
Sensemedic is suitable for most medication. Pills can be stored in their original blister packaging inside the Sensemedic Smart dispenser. For pills that are delivered in bottles, cartridges can be provided that fit inside the dispenser. In that case the pills have to be moved from the bottle into the cartridge, which is sometimes handles by pharmacies and sometimes by patients themselves, depending on the preference of the healthcare team. Pressurized Metered-Dose Inhalers (PMDIs) can be used with the Sensemedic Adhaler.
